Description

APC Smart-UPS SMT2200I Dubai 2200VA 1980W Tower UPS

The server does not care that the power cut lasted only three seconds.

One sharp dip. One restart. One database service that does not come back cleanly. By the time the office opens in Business Bay or Al Quoz, the accounts team is waiting, the ERP is stuck, and the IT person is trying to work out whether the issue is Windows, SQL, the NAS, or yesterday’s power event.

That is where the APC SMT2200I makes sense. Not for a single desktop. Not for a router under a reception desk. This is a higher-capacity Smart-UPS tower for offices that have already grown past small 1000VA and 1500VA units.

What the APC SMT2200I is

The APC SMT2200I is a 2200VA / 1980W line interactive Smart-UPS tower. It is built for servers, network switches, NAS storage, firewalls, CCTV NVRs, access control controllers, and office communication equipment that needs regulated power and clean shutdown time.

In APC’s range, the SMT2200I sits above the smaller Smart-UPS C and 1500VA Smart-UPS models. It gives more usable wattage for a small server room, accounts server, core network cabinet, or branch office IT load. It is still a tower unit, so it does not need rack space. That matters in Dubai offices where the “server room” is often a locked storage room, an accounts back office, or a small IT corner beside the Etisalat or du handoff.

This model is line interactive. That means it does not wait for full power failure before doing useful work. Automatic Voltage Regulation corrects low and high input voltage while utility power is still present. The battery is saved for real outages. For many Dubai offices, this is exactly the right topology: DEWA supply is usually stable, but older commercial buildings, high-density towers, and some free zone offices still see voltage dips, brief spikes, and short interruptions.

Line Interactive vs Online Double Conversion

Line interactive UPS systems correct voltage fluctuations using AVR without switching to battery every time. That keeps heat, noise, and battery wear lower. Online double conversion UPS systems regenerate power continuously and have zero transfer time, but they run hotter and cost more. The SMT2200I is the right fit for most office server closets. For medical equipment, financial trading systems, or data centre loads that require zero transfer time, step up to APC SRT online UPS models.

2200VA means 1980 watts. Size by watts, not VA.

UPS capacity can be confusing because every model carries two ratings. The SMT2200I is 2200VA and 1980W. VA is apparent power. Watts is the real load the UPS can support. When you are deciding what to connect, watts is the number that matters.

The SMT2200I can support up to 1980 watts, but that does not mean every installation should run at 1980W. A UPS loaded near 100% has less runtime, more heat, and less margin for startup surges. We size UPS systems with headroom because Dubai server rooms are not laboratory conditions. Ambient temperature, blocked ventilation, and mixed IT loads all affect real performance.

The 70% Rule — Sizing the SMT2200I

Keep the connected load below 70% of the UPS watt rating. For the SMT2200I, that means around 1,386W or less. This gives enough headroom for battery health, heat, and future equipment. Send us your server, NAS, switch, firewall, and monitor models on WhatsApp and we will calculate the load before quoting.

A typical small office server drawing 350W, one NAS at 120W, one firewall at 40W, and a 24-port switch at 80W gives a total load around 590W. The SMT2200I handles that easily, with room for extra storage or a second switch. A heavier setup with two servers at 450W each, shared storage at 200W, firewall, core switch, and KVM screen may sit around 1,250W. That is still inside the recommended range.

Where the SMT2200I starts to become the wrong fit is when the load is regularly above 1,400W or when the site needs long runtime. At that point, you either move up to SMT3000I for more wattage, choose an SMX model for external battery support, or move to SRT online double conversion for server room loads that justify it.

What can you connect to an SMT2200I?

The SMT2200I is usually specified for mixed IT loads, not one big device. It is a good fit for a branch office server, a NAS, the main firewall, network switches, PABX equipment, access control controller, and a small monitor used for emergency login.

For an office in JLT, DIP, Dubai Silicon Oasis, or Sharjah Industrial Area, the protected load may be simple: one physical server running accounting or ERP, one NAS for backups, one core switch, and the internet router. For a clinic, it may support the reception server, network cabinet, and access control system. For a warehouse, it may support the attendance machine, firewall, Wi-Fi controller, PABX, and small NVR.

The point is not to keep the whole office running. That is a generator or larger power project. The point is to protect the equipment that causes downtime, data loss, or service calls when it shuts down badly.

Load Example Typical Wattage SMT2200I Fit
Server + NAS + firewall + switch 500–800W Good fit
Two small servers + storage + network 900–1,300W Good fit with headroom check
Multiple servers and PoE switches 1,400W+ Consider SMT3000I or SRT
Full office desktops and printers Varies widely Usually not recommended

Why choose SMT instead of a smaller Smart-UPS C?

The smaller SMC range works well for many Dubai offices. A 1000VA or 1500VA Smart-UPS C can protect a single server, POS system, or small network cabinet. The SMT2200I is for the point where that is no longer enough.

The first reason is wattage. A 1500VA UPS rated around 900W or 1000W can be tight once the load includes a server, storage, core switch, and security equipment. The SMT2200I gives 1980W, so it can handle larger mixed loads without running close to the limit.

The second reason is management. SMT models are the better choice when the UPS is part of a managed IT environment. Offices with outsourced IT support, remote monitoring, scheduled shutdown policies, or multiple branch sites usually need more than a basic UPS. They need event logs, visible load readings, battery status, and shutdown integration that the IT team can trust.

SMT2200I is not the SmartConnect version

The SMT2200I does not include APC SmartConnect cloud monitoring. If you specifically need built-in SmartConnect alerts, ask for SMT2200IC. If you need network management through SNMP, the SMT platform is normally paired with an APC Network Management Card such as AP9640 where SmartSlot support is required.

This matters at 2AM. A normal UPS beeps in an empty room. Nobody hears it. A managed UPS can notify the right person, log the event, and trigger shutdown before the battery reaches a critical level. For a company running accounting software, CCTV recording, PABX calls, or a small virtualised server, that difference is not theoretical. It is the difference between a controlled shutdown and a Monday morning recovery job.

PowerChute shutdown for servers and NAS

A UPS is not only a battery. The battery gives time. The shutdown software decides what happens during that time.

With the SMT2200I, PowerChute can be configured so connected systems shut down before the battery is exhausted. That means open files are closed, services stop in the correct order, and the server does not just lose power when the UPS reaches zero. For Windows Server, Linux appliances, NAS storage, and small virtual environments, clean shutdown is often more important than squeezing every last minute out of the battery.

During installation, Vector Dubai connects the UPS, checks the load, tests battery transfer, and configures shutdown behaviour based on the site. A reception desktop does not need the same policy as a server running accounting. A PABX system does not need the same delay as a NAS. We set it for the equipment, not from a generic checklist.

Runtime in Dubai. What to expect.

The SMT2200I is built to protect IT equipment through short outages and give enough time for controlled shutdown. It is not a generator replacement. It is not designed to keep a full office running for hours.

Runtime depends on connected load and battery condition. A lightly loaded SMT2200I may run much longer than a unit close to full capacity. A unit installed in a cooled server room will perform better than one sitting in a hot electrical closet near a warehouse roller shutter.

For planning, treat the SMT2200I as a shutdown UPS. At lower loads, it gives enough time for the IT team to react or for PowerChute to shut down systems cleanly. At heavier loads, runtime is shorter, so shutdown rules need to be set carefully. If your requirement is 30 minutes, 1 hour, or longer, we should look at APC SMX extended runtime models or APC SRT systems with external battery packs.

Dubai heat changes battery life

In Dubai, UPS batteries commonly last 2–3 years in real office and server room conditions. Cooler sites may get longer. Rooms above 30°C, blocked airflow, poor AC, and weekend shutdowns reduce battery life. Keep the SMT2200I in a cooled space and leave ventilation clearance around the unit.

This is why installation matters. The UPS should not be pushed under a desk with paper boxes around it. It should not sit against a wall with blocked vents. It should not share a hot corner with network switches, CCTV equipment, and no AC. Small things like placement, load percentage, and shutdown settings decide whether the UPS protects the system properly when power fails.

SMT1500I vs SMT2200I vs SMT3000I

The SMT2200I sits in the middle of APC’s SMT tower range. That makes it a good choice when 1500VA is tight, but 3000VA is more than the site needs.

Model Capacity Best Fit
SMT1500IC 1500VA / 1000W Single server, firewall, switch, NAS, SmartConnect required
SMT2200I 2200VA / 1980W Higher tower load, small server room, mixed IT equipment
SMT3000I 3000VA / 2700W Larger server closet, heavier load, more headroom

Choose SMT1500IC if your load is under 700W and you want built-in cloud monitoring. Choose SMT2200I if the load is closer to 900W–1,300W and you want a stronger tower UPS with more wattage headroom. Choose SMT3000I if your IT load is heading above 1,400W or you expect more equipment within the next 12 months.

For sensitive systems that cannot accept even a short transfer time, move out of the SMT range and look at APC SRT online UPS models. Online double conversion is the right choice for financial systems, medical devices, trading floors, and data centre loads. It costs more and creates more heat, but it gives zero transfer time.

Outlets, display, and local installation notes

The SMT2200I is commonly used with server and networking equipment using IEC power leads. Before delivery, Vector Dubai checks the outlet requirement against the actual equipment list. Some UAE office equipment still uses BS 1363 three-pin plugs, while most servers, switches, and rack devices use IEC power cords. We supply the correct connection plan instead of guessing on site.

The front LCD gives the numbers the IT team needs: load percentage, battery charge, input voltage, output voltage, and status events. That matters during handover. We do not just power it on and leave. We check the connected load, confirm the site voltage, test battery transfer, and explain what the alarm states mean.

Installation means tested under load

Vector Dubai installation includes connection, load check, transfer test, alarm review, and PowerChute shutdown setup where needed. For managed IT sites, we also advise whether the UPS should be paired with an APC Network Management Card such as AP9640.

Pricing, supply, and installation in UAE

APC SMT2200I price in Dubai is quoted in AED on request. We do not publish fixed pricing because stock, project quantity, delivery location, installation scope, and warranty handling can change the final number. A one-unit office installation in Dubai is not the same as a 12-unit rollout across Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

Vector Dubai supplies and installs APC UPS systems across all seven emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain. We work with offices in DMCC, DIFC, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, Jebel Ali Free Zone, ADGM, Masdar City, and older commercial buildings where power quality and cooling need closer attention.

For multi-site clients, we can quote one engagement covering delivery, installation, load testing, and handover. That is useful for retail branches, clinics, warehouses, logistics offices, and companies standardising UPS protection across Etisalat and du network points.

Frequently asked questions

My equipment is around 1,200W. Do I need SMT2200I or SMT3000I?

SMT2200I is usually the right fit for a 1,200W load. It gives 1980W capacity, and 1,200W sits at about 61% load. That is inside the recommended range. Choose SMT3000I if you expect the load to pass 1,400W soon or you want more runtime headroom.

Can the SMT2200I run a server room through a full power outage?

No. It is designed for short outages and controlled shutdown, not hours of backup. If the site needs long runtime, use an APC SMX extended runtime model or an APC SRT system with external battery packs.

What is the replacement battery for APC SMT2200I?

The battery part number should be confirmed against the unit serial and APC datasheet before ordering. In Dubai conditions, plan for battery replacement every 2–3 years. Vector Dubai can check the UPS label, supply the correct APC replacement battery, and replace it on site.

SMT2200I vs SMT2200IC — what is the difference?

SMT2200I is the non-SmartConnect version. SMT2200IC includes APC SmartConnect cloud monitoring via ethernet. If you want built-in cloud alerts, choose SMT2200IC. If your IT team uses network management cards and SNMP, confirm SmartSlot and NMC requirements before ordering.
