In Dubai offices, especially older towers and busy free zones, the problem is often not a dramatic outage. It is a short voltage event, a repeated dip, or a building power reset that takes longer than expected.

What the APC SRT48RMBP is

In plain terms: the UPS protects the load. The SRT48RMBP gives it more time.

A 1000VA or 1500VA online UPS may carry the load safely, but without an external battery pack, runtime is usually measured in minutes. The SRT48RMBP is not a UPS by itself. It has no VA rating, no watt rating, and no output sockets. It connects to a compatible APC Smart-UPS SRT rack UPS through the battery expansion connection. Why external runtime matters more than the UPS size

Many buyers try to solve runtime by buying a larger UPS. Sometimes that is the wrong move.

A UPS has two jobs. First, it must carry the connected load without overload. Second, it must run long enough for the business requirement. These are related, but they are not the same thing.

For example, a rack may only draw 350W: one firewall, two switches, an NVR, a fibre router, and a small server. A 1000VA / 1000W SRT rack UPS can carry that load. The capacity is fine. But if the internal battery only gives a few minutes under real site conditions, buying a 3000VA UPS may be unnecessary. The load does not need 3000W. It needs more battery time.

For a Dubai network rack, the need is often simple: keep internet, VPN, CCTV, access control, and VoIP alive through a building power event. Staff can tolerate lights flickering. They cannot tolerate the firewall rebooting, the CCTV recorder dropping, or the PABX losing active calls while the office is open.

These racks are not always in ideal rooms. Some sit in storage areas with weak AC. Some are in electrical closets. Some are beside glass partitions where afternoon heat builds up. The UPS may be online double conversion, but the battery still lives in Dubai conditions. Runtime and battery life must be planned around that reality.

Incoming AC is converted and regenerated continuously, so the protected equipment sees clean inverter output all the time. There is no transfer delay during a power failure because the inverter is already carrying the load.

That matters for sensitive racks: servers, storage, firewall clusters, medical IT equipment, telecom devices, and building systems that do not like messy power. In Dubai, online UPS systems are often used in server rooms, finance offices, clinics, logistics operations, and facilities where voltage dips in the building cannot be allowed to reach the load.

The SRT48RMBP supports that setup by increasing battery reserve. The power quality comes from the UPS. The longer operating window comes from the external battery pack.

How many battery packs do you need?

The honest answer: it depends on the load.

A 200W network rack and an 800W rack may use the same UPS model, but their runtime will not be close. The 200W rack may be protecting a router, firewall, switch, and access control controller. The 800W rack may include servers, storage, PoE switching, NVR recording, and several powered devices. Same battery pack. Very different runtime.

This is why we do not quote runtime from a clean lab table as if it will match every Dubai site. A battery pack installed in a cooled server room at 23°C will behave better than one installed in a 35°C electrical closet. A pack supporting a 30% load will run longer than one supporting a 75% load. Old internal UPS batteries will also affect real runtime planning.

Runtime in Dubai — what changes after adding SRT48RMBP

The SRT48RMBP is bought for one reason: more minutes on battery.

A rack UPS without an external battery pack is usually sized for safe shutdown. That means the UPS gives enough time for a server, NVR, firewall, or storage device to close safely before the battery is empty. Good for data protection. Not always good for business continuity.

With an external battery pack, the aim changes. Instead of “shut down before the battery runs out,” the goal becomes “keep the rack alive until mains power comes back, the generator starts, or the facilities team restores the circuit.” That is a different requirement.

Runtime depends on four numbers: UPS model, connected watts, battery age, and room temperature. A lightly loaded SRT1000RMXLI will gain more runtime from one SRT48RMBP than a heavily loaded SRT1500RMXLI. A cool server room will perform better than a warm electrical closet. A new battery pack will perform better than one that has already lived through three Dubai summers.

For real Dubai planning, we treat APC runtime tables as a starting point, not the final answer. We check the load percentage on the UPS, confirm what equipment is connected, and then quote based on the target runtime. Ten minutes for controlled shutdown. Twenty to thirty minutes for generator delay. Longer runtime for sites where internet, CCTV, access control, or PABX must stay online during building power faults.

SRT48RMBP vs moving to a larger UPS

The right choice depends on the problem.

If the current UPS is overloaded, a battery pack will not fix it. A UPS running close to its watt limit needs a larger UPS. The SRT48RMBP adds stored battery energy; it does not increase the output watt capacity of the UPS.

If the current UPS load is healthy but runtime is too short, the SRT48RMBP is the correct path. A rack drawing 300W on a 1000W UPS does not need a 3000W UPS just to stay alive longer. It needs more battery reserve.

Step down: if the site only needs basic shutdown time, stay with the internal battery of the SRT1000RMXLI or SRT1500RMXLI and configure PowerChute properly. That keeps cost and rack space lower.

Step up: if the load is above the comfortable range for a 1000VA or 1500VA SRT rack UPS, move to a higher SRT model such as the SRT2200RMXLI or SRT3000RMXLI and use the matching battery pack for that UPS class. Do not force a small UPS to carry a rack that has already outgrown it.

Installation in a live rack

Installing a rack battery pack is not the same as plugging in a desktop UPS.

The battery pack has to be placed correctly in the rack, normally low in the cabinet because of weight. The rack rails, shelf support, and available depth must be checked. Battery cables must not be stretched, crushed, or routed across hot equipment exhaust. Airflow around the UPS and battery pack should stay clear. In small Dubai offices, the rack often already contains fibre equipment, patch panels, CCTV NVRs, switches, and loose power adapters. That makes planning important.

Battery replacement and service life

The SRT48RMBP contains sealed battery modules designed for UPS use. Like all VRLA UPS batteries, they are consumable parts. They age even when power is stable. Heat, repeated discharge, poor ventilation, and high charging temperature shorten life.

In Dubai, a realistic service life is usually 2–3 years. In a properly cooled server room, the battery may last longer. In a warm rack room or electrical closet, it may not. The UPS will normally report battery condition and replacement alerts, but waiting until the alarm appears is not always the best plan for critical racks.
