Description
APC SMX120BP Dubai External Battery Pack for Smart-UPS X SMX Series
The UPS is working. The load is protected. The rack looks tidy.
Then someone asks the real question: “How long will it run if the power fails?”
Five minutes is fine when the job is clean shutdown. Five minutes is not fine when the requirement is to keep the network alive through a longer outage, finish a card transaction at the POS counter, hold a branch VPN online, or give the IT team enough time to reach the server room before the UPS battery is empty.
That is where the APC SMX120BP comes in. It is an external battery pack for compatible APC Smart-UPS X SMX extended-runtime systems. It does not replace the UPS. It sits beside it or below it in the rack and gives the UPS more battery capacity. Same load. Longer runtime.
What the APC SMX120BP is
The APC SMX120BP is an external battery pack used with compatible APC Smart-UPS X SMX models. The SMX range is the extended-runtime part of APC’s line interactive Smart-UPS family. These UPS systems are chosen when the customer needs better runtime planning than a standard tower UPS can offer.
A normal UPS has its battery sealed inside the unit. You buy the UPS, connect the load, and accept the runtime that the internal battery gives you. That may be 4 minutes, 8 minutes, 15 minutes, or more depending on the load. With the SMX extended-runtime design, compatible external battery packs can be added so the same UPS keeps running for longer.
This matters in Dubai offices where the UPS is protecting more than one computer. A branch firewall, Etisalat or du internet router, core switch, NAS, PABX system, access control controller, and CCTV NVR may all sit in the same rack. When the power drops, those systems need to stay online together. One device staying up while the switch dies is not backup power. It is only partial protection.
Vector Dubai supplies and installs APC SMX120BP battery packs for businesses that already have compatible SMX UPS systems, and for new Smart-UPS X projects where runtime is part of the requirement from day one. We check the UPS model, battery connector, load, site temperature, rack space, and shutdown requirement before quoting. No guessing from a product photo.
External battery pack vs UPS capacity
The SMX120BP does not increase the VA or watt rating of your UPS. If the connected UPS is rated at 2200VA / 1980W, that limit stays the same after adding the battery pack. What changes is runtime. The UPS can run the same connected load for longer because it has more battery energy available.
VA and watts still matter — even for a battery pack
Battery packs do not have a VA rating. They do not have a watt rating. The UPS has those ratings. The battery pack only extends how long the UPS can support that load.
That difference is where many runtime mistakes happen.
A customer may say, “Add one SMX120BP and give me 30 minutes.” That may be possible at a light load. It may not be possible at a heavy load. Runtime depends on the wattage connected to the UPS, not just the number of battery packs attached.
Example: a firewall, router, two small switches, and a NAS may draw around 250W to 400W. One external battery pack can make a useful difference there. A server rack drawing 1600W to 1900W is a different story. The same battery pack is feeding a much heavier load, so runtime will be shorter. Same product. Different result.
The safe way to size it is to start with the UPS load in watts. Not VA. Not the number printed on the front of the UPS. Actual connected watts. The UPS display usually shows load percentage. We use that, the connected equipment list, and the runtime target to check whether one SMX120BP is enough or whether the project needs a different UPS/battery layout.
The 70% rule — still applies
Keep the connected load below 70% of the UPS watt rating where possible. The SMX120BP gives longer runtime, but it does not make an overloaded UPS safe. A UPS running near maximum load has less margin, more heat, and shorter battery time during an outage. Send us the load list if you are not sure.
Which UPS systems use the SMX120BP?
The SMX120BP belongs to APC’s Smart-UPS X extended-runtime range. It is used with compatible SMX UPS systems that support external battery expansion. In the VDS APC range, the SMX family includes models such as SMX750I, SMX1000I, SMX1500RMI2U, SMX2200HV, SMX3000HV, and SMX3000HVNC.
Compatibility must be checked by exact UPS model, not only by the letters “SMX”. APC uses different external battery packs across different Smart-UPS X capacities. Some smaller SMX models use a different battery pack. Higher-capacity SMX models may use the SMX120BP. Before we quote, Vector Dubai confirms the UPS part number, connector type, battery bus, and whether your UPS firmware recognises the external pack correctly.
This is not paperwork. It prevents expensive mistakes. The wrong battery pack may not connect, may not be detected by the UPS, or may give incorrect runtime reporting. Runtime reporting matters because clean shutdown software uses it to decide when servers should power down.
Compatibility check required before dispatch
Do not order SMX120BP only because your UPS has “SMX” in the model name. Send the full UPS model number and a photo of the rear panel. Vector Dubai checks the battery connector and confirms the right APC external battery pack before supply and installation.
Why Dubai offices add external battery packs
Most UPS purchases start with protection. External battery pack purchases start with time.
A standard UPS may give enough time for one server to shut down. But many Dubai businesses need the network to stay up during short power events. A retail office needs POS and card machines working long enough to finish customer transactions. A logistics office in Jebel Ali Free Zone needs the internet link and barcode system online while staff finish dispatch work. A clinic needs network, reception PC, router, and small server available long enough for controlled shutdown. A PABX system should not drop all calls because the building had a brief voltage event.
The SMX120BP is used when the internal UPS battery alone does not meet that runtime requirement. It gives the connected SMX UPS more stored battery energy, so the UPS can support the same protected load for longer.
Dubai has another reason: access. Many server closets are locked, shared, or located in buildings where after-hours access is slow. If the power fails at 2AM, the IT person may not be able to reach the site in 5 minutes. More runtime gives the team breathing room. It also gives PowerChute or network shutdown tools time to close servers properly instead of forcing a hard crash.
That is the real job of an external battery pack. It buys time. Time for people. Time for software. Time for the business to avoid a messy shutdown.
Line interactive Smart-UPS X power protection
The SMX120BP itself does not decide the UPS topology. The connected Smart-UPS X unit does. APC SMX systems are line interactive UPS systems with automatic voltage regulation. That means the UPS corrects voltage dips and high input voltage without switching to battery every time the incoming supply moves outside the ideal range.
This is useful in older commercial buildings, busy towers, and some free zone facilities where voltage may dip under load. The UPS protects the equipment without wasting battery cycles on every small brownout. When the power fails fully, the UPS transfers to battery and the SMX120BP helps extend how long that battery operation can continue.
For most server closets, network racks, POS back offices, CCTV rooms, and VoIP/PABX setups, line interactive power protection is the right class. Online double conversion is used where zero transfer time and continuous regenerated output are required, such as sensitive server rooms, medical equipment, and financial systems. Smart-UPS X sits in the practical middle: better runtime options than standard office UPS models, without the heat and running cost of online UPS systems.
Line interactive vs online double conversion
Line interactive UPS systems correct voltage using AVR and switch to battery during outages. Online double conversion UPS systems regenerate power continuously and provide zero transfer time. SMX systems are chosen when the buyer needs extended runtime for office IT and network loads. SRT or SRTG online UPS systems are chosen when the load needs continuous regenerated power.
What Vector Dubai checks before installation
Adding an external battery pack is not just placing a second box beside the UPS. The connected UPS must detect the battery pack. Runtime reporting must update. The battery cable must be seated correctly. The rack must support the weight. The site must have enough ventilation. And the shutdown settings must match the new runtime.
During supply and installation, Vector Dubai checks the UPS model, load percentage, battery health, input voltage, output status, and runtime estimate after the SMX120BP is connected. If PowerChute is used, shutdown thresholds are reviewed so the extra runtime is used properly. If a network management card is installed, runtime and battery status can be monitored remotely.
We also check the room. A battery pack installed in a hot storage corner will not perform like one installed in a cooled server closet. Dubai heat is hard on UPS batteries. If the rack is in a room with weak AC or blocked airflow, we say it before the installation is complete.

Runtime in Dubai — what changes after adding SMX120BP
Runtime is not a fixed number printed on the battery pack. It depends on three things: the UPS model, the connected load in watts, and the condition of the batteries. The APC SMX120BP increases available battery capacity for a compatible Smart-UPS X system, so the same UPS can support the same load for longer.
A lightly loaded network rack may see a strong runtime gain. A heavily loaded rack will still benefit, but the extra minutes are consumed faster because the UPS is feeding more watts. That is why Vector Dubai asks for the UPS model and load before quoting. Runtime planning based only on the battery pack model is not accurate enough for a server room.
Dubai heat also matters. UPS batteries are tested under controlled conditions, but real offices are not always controlled. A battery pack sitting in a cooled server closet in Dubai Internet City will age better than one placed in a hot electrical room behind a retail branch. If the ambient temperature stays above 30°C for long periods, battery life drops. In non-cooled spaces that approach 40°C to 45°C, runtime and battery lifespan fall faster.
As a practical Dubai guide, expect UPS batteries to need replacement after 2 to 3 years in many office and server room environments. Cooler rooms may get more. Hot rooms get less. During installation we check where the SMX120BP will sit, whether airflow is blocked, and whether the rack has enough space around the battery pack.
Runtime target first. Product second.
Tell us the UPS model, connected load, and target runtime. For example: “SMX3000HV, 900W load, need 30 minutes.” That gives enough detail to check whether one SMX120BP is enough or whether the design needs more battery capacity or a different UPS class.
SMX120BP decision guide
Choose the APC SMX120BP when you already have a compatible Smart-UPS X system and the only problem is runtime. Your UPS capacity is enough. The load is within range. The UPS is healthy. You just need more minutes on battery.
Do not use an external battery pack to fix an undersized UPS. If the UPS is overloaded, close to overload, or running at 90% load every day, adding SMX120BP will not solve the main issue. The UPS watt rating still limits the load. In that case the right answer may be a larger Smart-UPS X model or a move to an online UPS such as the APC SRT range.
Step down: if your requirement is only clean shutdown for one server or a small network rack, you may not need an external pack. A standard Smart-UPS model with internal battery may be enough. The UPS can hold the load for several minutes while PowerChute shuts the server down safely.
Stay with SMX120BP: if your Smart-UPS X model is compatible, your load is reasonable, and you need longer runtime for network gear, branch IT, NAS storage, access control, PABX, or POS systems, the external battery pack is the correct route.
Step up: if the load is sensitive, the rack has multiple production servers, or the site needs zero transfer time, consider APC SRT online double conversion UPS systems instead. For large server rooms, medical systems, and financial workloads, the UPS topology matters as much as runtime.
| Requirement | Best Fit |
|---|---|
| Clean shutdown only | UPS internal battery may be enough |
| Longer runtime for compatible SMX UPS | Add APC SMX120BP |
| UPS near overload | Change UPS size first |
| Zero transfer time required | Move to APC SRT online UPS |
| Multi-site runtime upgrade | Survey, load check, and staged installation |
Connection, display, and monitoring
The SMX120BP connects to the compatible UPS through the external battery connector. Once installed correctly, the UPS should detect the external battery pack and update runtime reporting. That runtime value is important because the UPS display, management software, and shutdown rules depend on it.
On many sites, the UPS is watched through the front display only. That is acceptable for a small office where someone checks the rack daily. For managed IT rooms, remote monitoring is better. A SmartSlot network management card allows IT teams to see battery status, load, events, and alarms over the network. It also supports SNMP monitoring for platforms used by IT support teams.
For Dubai businesses with branches in different emirates, this matters. A UPS in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi should not depend on someone walking into the rack room and reading the display. Remote alerts let the IT team know when the UPS is on battery, when runtime is low, or when battery replacement is due.
Network card not included with the battery pack
The SMX120BP is an external battery pack. It is not a network card and does not add SNMP monitoring by itself. Monitoring depends on the connected UPS model and whether a compatible APC network management card is installed.
Pricing, supply, and installation in Dubai
APC SMX120BP pricing in Dubai is quoted in AED after confirming the connected UPS model and quantity. We do not publish fixed pricing because APC battery pack availability, project quantity, delivery location, and installation scope affect the final quote.
Vector Dubai supplies and installs APC external battery packs across the UAE. Installation means the battery pack is connected, detected by the UPS, runtime is checked, battery status is reviewed, and shutdown settings are confirmed. We do not hand over a battery pack and leave the site guessing.
For replacements or upgrades, send a photo of the UPS front label, rear connector area, and current load screen. For new projects, send the equipment list: servers, switches, routers, storage, PABX, access control, CCTV, and any other load that must stay online. We calculate the load and quote the right APC battery setup.

Frequently asked questions
Does the APC SMX120BP increase the VA or watts of my UPS?
No. The SMX120BP increases runtime only. If your UPS is rated at 3000VA / 2700W, that rating stays the same. The battery pack gives the UPS more stored energy so it can support the existing load for longer.
My rack load is 900W. Do I need one SMX120BP or a bigger UPS?
That depends on your UPS watt rating and target runtime. If the connected Smart-UPS X model is well above 900W capacity and compatible with SMX120BP, one battery pack may be suitable. If the UPS is already close to its limit, change the UPS size first. Battery packs do not fix overload.
Can SMX120BP run a server through a full power outage?
It can extend runtime, but “full power outage” is too broad. A 200W network load and a 1800W server load will not run for the same duration. Send the UPS model, current load, and required runtime in minutes. Vector Dubai will size it properly before quoting.
Which UPS models are compatible with APC SMX120BP?
SMX120BP is for compatible APC Smart-UPS X SMX extended-runtime models. Compatibility must be checked by exact UPS part number. Send the UPS model label or rear-panel photo before ordering so we can confirm the correct battery pack.
SMX120BP vs replacing the UPS battery — what is the difference?
A replacement battery restores the UPS to normal internal battery condition. The SMX120BP is an additional external battery pack that extends runtime on supported SMX UPS systems. If your existing battery is weak, replace it first. Then add external runtime if required.
Does Vector Dubai install SMX120BP on the same day?
Same-day installation may be possible for available stock in Dubai, depending on schedule and site access. We first confirm UPS compatibility, battery pack availability, load, and location. Then we quote supply and installation in AED.
Is APC SMX120BP covered under Schneider Electric warranty in UAE?
Yes, APC battery packs supplied through authorised UAE channels carry Schneider Electric warranty coverage. Warranty terms depend on product and battery condition. Vector Dubai supports warranty coordination for APC products supplied and installed by us.
Will Dubai heat reduce SMX120BP battery life?
Yes. Heat is one of the main reasons UPS batteries age faster in Dubai. In cooled server rooms, battery life is usually better. In warm electrical rooms or non-cooled storage spaces, battery life can drop sharply. Many Dubai sites plan UPS battery replacement every 2 to 3 years.
Who is the supplier of APC SMX120BP in Dubai?
Vector Dubai is an authorised APC/Schneider Electric supplier and installer in Dubai. We supply APC SMX120BP with installation, compatibility checking, runtime verification, and warranty support across the UAE.
What is the best external battery pack for APC Smart-UPS X in Dubai?
The best battery pack is the one that matches the exact UPS model and runtime target. For compatible SMX systems, SMX120BP is used to extend runtime. For other Smart-UPS ranges, different APC battery packs may be required. Send the full model number before purchase.
