Description
APC Smart-UPS SMT3000I Dubai 3000VA 2700W Tower UPS
The office is still open at 7:40PM. Finance is closing month-end. The file server is busy. The PABX is taking calls. The network switch is feeding the whole floor.
Then the lights dip for half a second.
Not a full outage. Just a voltage drop. Enough to restart the switch. Enough to freeze one server. Enough for the accounting software to throw a database error that nobody wants to see at month-end.
That is where the APC SMT3000I fits. Not for a single desktop. Not for a router in a home office. This is a 3000VA Smart-UPS for business loads that are too important to leave on raw building power — servers, storage, core switches, PABX systems, CCTV servers, access control controllers, and office equipment that must shut down cleanly when DEWA power is interrupted.
What the APC SMT3000I is
The APC SMT3000I is a 3000VA / 2700W line interactive Smart-UPS tower. It sits above the smaller SMT750I, SMT1000I, SMT1500I, and SMT2200I models in APC’s Smart-UPS SMT tower range. The job is simple: keep business-critical IT equipment alive during short power events, correct voltage dips before they reach your hardware, and give servers enough battery time to shut down without data loss.
Line interactive means the UPS is not waiting passively for a blackout. It is watching incoming voltage all the time. When voltage drops, rises, or becomes unstable, the SMT3000I uses automatic voltage regulation to correct the supply without switching to battery. That matters in Dubai offices because many power problems are not long outages. They are brief dips, brownouts, switching events, and small interruptions caused by building loads, ageing electrical rooms, lifts, AC compressors, and nearby construction work.
In a server room, even a short dip can create a long problem. A switch restart can drop every user. A NAS interruption can corrupt open files. A PABX reboot can cut active calls. A CCTV server crash can stop recording at the wrong time. The SMT3000I is built for those loads — not just to hold power for a few minutes, but to keep voltage stable before the outage happens.
Line Interactive vs Online Double Conversion
The SMT3000I is line interactive. It corrects voltage fluctuations using AVR and switches to battery during a power cut. This suits most Dubai offices, server closets, PABX rooms, and network cabinets. Online double conversion UPS systems such as APC SRT regenerate power continuously and have zero transfer time. They are better for data centres, medical systems, lab equipment, and financial trading rooms where even a few milliseconds of transfer is not acceptable.
3000VA means 2700 watts. Use the watts number.
UPS sizing causes confusion because every model has two numbers. VA and watts.
The SMT3000I is rated at 3000VA and 2700W. VA is apparent power. Watts is the real usable power available to your equipment. When you are deciding whether this UPS can support your load, use the 2700W figure. Not the 3000VA figure.
A typical Dubai office server room may have one tower server drawing 350W, one NAS at 120W, one 48-port switch at 80W, one firewall at 40W, one PABX system at 80W, and a monitor or KVM at 40W. That is around 710W before headroom. The SMT3000I has plenty of room for that load and gives cleaner shutdown time than a smaller 1000VA or 1500VA unit.
A heavier setup could include two servers at 450W each, a storage unit at 300W, two switches at 120W total, a firewall, a PABX cabinet, and CCTV recording hardware. That can sit around 1500W to 1800W depending on the equipment. This is the type of load where the SMT3000I starts to make sense. Smaller UPS units may power on, but they leave too little runtime and too little margin.
The 70% Rule — Sizing the SMT3000I
The SMT3000I is rated for 2700W. For long battery life and stable runtime, keep the normal connected load below about 1890W. That is 70% of the watt rating. The remaining 810W is not wasted. It gives room for startup surges, future equipment, hotter Dubai rooms, and battery ageing after two years in service.
This 70% rule is especially important in the UAE. A UPS installed in a properly cooled server room behaves very differently from one placed in a warm electrical closet near a window, a warehouse mezzanine, or a small office where AC is turned off overnight. Heat reduces battery capacity. It also shortens battery life. A UPS that looks correctly sized on paper can feel too small after two summers if it was loaded too close to the limit from day one.
Not sure of your load? Send Vector Dubai the equipment list: server model, switch model, storage model, firewall, PABX, CCTV recorder, and any monitors or external drives connected to the UPS. We calculate the working wattage and recommend whether SMT3000I is the right size or whether SMT2200I, SMC3000I, or an online SRT model makes better sense.
Why choose SMT3000I instead of a cheaper 3000VA UPS?
There are many 3000VA UPS listings online. Some are built for desktops. Some are designed for basic backup only. The SMT3000I is different because it belongs to APC’s Smart-UPS SMT range. That means line interactive voltage correction, pure sine wave output, LCD status display, managed shutdown support, and business-grade monitoring options.
Pure sine wave output matters for servers, storage, active PFC power supplies, switches, and business electronics. Cheaper stepped-wave UPS systems may be acceptable for simple desktops, but they are not the right fit for a server, NAS, or PABX cabinet that runs all day. The SMT3000I gives equipment the type of AC waveform it expects.
The LCD also matters. In a Dubai office, the person checking the UPS may not be an IT engineer. It may be the office manager, facility supervisor, or admin staff member opening the server closet after an alarm. The screen shows load, battery condition, input voltage, output voltage, and runtime information without opening software. One look tells you whether the UPS is overloaded, on battery, or asking for service.
SmartConnect is not built into SMT3000I
The SMT3000I is the non-SmartConnect tower model. It does not have the IC suffix. For cloud monitoring, choose an IC model where available. For network-based monitoring on SMT systems, use APC SmartSlot options such as the AP9640 network management card where supported.
The key SMT advantage: managed UPS control
The SMT range is often chosen when the UPS needs to be part of the IT system, not just a battery sitting under a table. A small Back-UPS can keep a desktop alive. A Smart-UPS SMT can protect servers, signal shutdown, report load, show battery health, and support managed power planning.
For a single server, USB or serial shutdown may be enough. The UPS tells the server when it is on battery. PowerChute then closes applications and shuts the operating system down cleanly before the battery runs out. That avoids the hard shutdown that damages databases, virtual machines, file shares, and accounting software.
For a larger site, network management may be needed. That is where SmartSlot and a network management card come in. With the right card installed, the UPS can be monitored over the network using SNMP and web access. IT teams can see battery condition, event logs, load level, input voltage, and alarms without standing in front of the UPS. For managed offices in DMCC, DIFC, Dubai Internet City, Jebel Ali Free Zone, and Abu Dhabi branches, that visibility is often the reason to choose SMT instead of a lower range.
Think about the 2AM scenario. The building power fails. Nobody is in the office. The UPS transfers to battery. If the UPS is unmanaged, the first sign may be users calling at 8:30AM because systems are down. With proper shutdown software and monitoring, the server can close cleanly, the event can be logged, and IT can see what happened before staff arrive.
That is the difference between buying backup power and buying power protection. Backup power gives minutes. Power protection gives control over what happens during those minutes.
Where SMT3000I fits in a Dubai office
The SMT3000I is a good fit for a medium office server closet, a branch office with one or two servers, a network cabinet feeding VoIP phones, a PABX room, a storage appliance, or a CCTV recording system that cannot drop during a short outage. It is also useful where voltage dips are more common than full power cuts — older commercial buildings, small warehouses, showrooms, and free zone offices with mixed electrical loads.
It is not the first choice for a workstation-only environment. If you are protecting two PCs and a router, this is too much UPS. It is also not the first choice for medical equipment, trading floors, or systems requiring zero transfer time. For those, move to APC SRT online double conversion. The SMT3000I sits in the middle: serious office IT protection without the heat, cost, and continuous conversion design of an online UPS.

Vector Dubai supplies and installs APC Smart-UPS systems across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain. Installation means the UPS is placed, connected, tested under load, shutdown software is configured where required, and the connected equipment is checked against the UPS capacity. We do not leave a 3000VA UPS in a box and call that installation.
Runtime in Dubai — what to expect
Runtime depends on the connected load. A 3000VA / 2700W UPS does not give the same battery time at 500W, 1200W, 1800W, and 2700W. The higher the load, the faster the battery drains. That is normal UPS behaviour.
For the APC SMT3000I, treat runtime as shutdown time, not generator replacement. At light office IT loads, it can keep systems running long enough to ride through short cuts and voltage events. At heavier server loads, the purpose is controlled shutdown: save files, close databases, stop virtual machines, and power down before the battery is empty.
In Dubai, runtime should always be planned with temperature in mind. A UPS in a cooled server room will perform better than the same unit in a warm storage room, electrical closet, or back office where the AC is switched off after working hours. Batteries do not like heat. Above 30°C, capacity drops faster. In non-cooled rooms that reach 40–45°C, battery life can fall sharply.
Dubai battery planning
Plan for 2–3 years of battery life in Dubai for most office and server room installations. APC batteries may last longer in cooler lab conditions, but UAE heat changes the real result. Keep the UPS in an air-conditioned room, leave space around the unit, and avoid installing it next to windows, pantry heat, or electrical panels that run warm all day.
If your load is close to 2700W, the SMT3000I is not being used for long backup. It is being used for clean shutdown. If your load is around 1000W to 1500W, runtime is more comfortable. If your load is below 700W, the UPS has more headroom than smaller models and can ride through many short office power events without stress.
Need 30 minutes or more? Do not guess. The SMT3000I is an internal-battery tower UPS. For long runtime, the design usually moves to extended-runtime models or online systems with external battery packs. Send the equipment list and required backup time on WhatsApp. Vector Dubai will size it properly instead of overselling the wrong unit.
SMT3000I vs SMT2200I vs SRT3000XLI
The SMT3000I is often compared with two models: the smaller SMT2200I and the online SRT3000XLI. Same broad capacity area. Different buyer.
| Model | Capacity | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| SMT2200I | 2200VA / 1980W | One server, network cabinet, PABX, storage, moderate office load |
| SMT3000I | 3000VA / 2700W | Larger server closet, higher switch load, storage, CCTV server, PABX room |
| SRT3000XLI | 3000VA / 2700W | Online double conversion, zero transfer time, sensitive server room and technical loads |
Choose SMT2200I if the connected load stays below about 1350W and you do not expect much growth. It is smaller, usually lower cost, and still belongs to the Smart-UPS SMT range.
Choose SMT3000I if your normal load is closer to 1500W to 1900W, or if you want extra margin for a second server, more switches, a larger storage unit, or a PABX and CCTV recorder on the same protected supply.
Choose SRT3000XLI if the equipment cannot accept transfer time, or if power quality is a bigger issue than short backup. SRT is online double conversion. It continuously regenerates output power. It costs more and generates more heat, but it is the better choice for sensitive systems, lab loads, medical devices, and server rooms where zero transfer time is required.
Decision guide
If the problem is office voltage dips and server shutdown, choose SMT3000I. If the problem is zero-transfer-time power quality, step up to SRT3000XLI. If the load is well below 1400W, check SMT2200I first. Oversizing costs money, but undersizing causes overload alarms and poor runtime.
Outlets, display, and shutdown software
The SMT3000I is built for IT loads, so the outlet type must be checked before installation. Most servers, switches, storage units, and rack PDUs use IEC power leads. Some office devices use UAE three-pin plugs and may need the correct power lead or adapter. Vector Dubai checks the connected equipment before installation so the UPS is not delivered without the right cables.
The front LCD is useful during service and after a power event. It shows input voltage, output voltage, battery charge, load level, and UPS status. For facility managers, this is important. You do not need to open monitoring software just to know whether the UPS is overloaded or on battery.
For servers, the shutdown software is the part buyers should not ignore. A UPS that keeps a server running for eight minutes but never tells it to shut down is only half installed. PowerChute allows clean shutdown when battery runtime reaches a set threshold. That protects accounting databases, file shares, virtual machines, CCTV recording software, and PABX systems from a hard power cut.
Check the battery model before replacement
SMT3000I replacement battery details must be checked against the UPS serial and APC battery reference before ordering. Do not buy a battery only by UPS capacity. APC 3000VA models can use different battery cartridges depending on model family and generation.
Pricing, supply, and installation in Dubai
APC SMT3000I pricing is quoted in AED on request. Vector Dubai provides a same-day quote with VAT breakdown, delivery, and installation scope. We do not display fixed AED prices because APC stock, warranty route, project quantity, and delivery location can affect the final quote.
Installation is part of the service. For a 3000VA UPS, that matters. The unit must be placed safely, connected to the correct load, checked for overload, tested under real equipment draw, and configured for shutdown where needed. If network monitoring is required, we can supply and configure the APC AP9640 network management card where compatible.
Vector Dubai has supplied and installed APC UPS systems in the UAE since 2010. Typical SMT3000I buyers include offices in Business Bay, Deira, Al Quoz, Jebel Ali Free Zone, DMCC, Dubai Internet City, DIFC, Sharjah industrial areas, Abu Dhabi offices, and multi-branch retail or service companies using Etisalat or du connectivity.

Frequently asked questions
My equipment is around 1600W. Do I need SMT3000I or SMT2200I?
Choose SMT3000I. The SMT3000I is rated at 2700W, and 1600W is about 59% load. That leaves good headroom. SMT2200I is 1980W, so 1600W would be over 80% load. It would work too hard and runtime would be short.
Can SMT3000I run a server room through a full power outage?
Not for a long outage. It is mainly for voltage correction, short power cuts, and controlled shutdown. Runtime depends on load. At higher loads, expect shutdown time, not extended operation. For 30 minutes or more, ask for an extended-runtime or online UPS design.
What is the replacement battery for APC SMT3000I?
The battery cartridge must be verified from the APC datasheet or the UPS serial number before ordering. Vector Dubai supplies APC replacement batteries and can confirm the correct APCRBC model before dispatch. In Dubai, expect typical battery life of 2–3 years depending on room temperature and load.
SMT3000I vs SRT3000XLI — what is the difference?
SMT3000I is line interactive. It corrects voltage using AVR and switches to battery during cuts. SRT3000XLI is online double conversion, so it regenerates output power continuously and has zero transfer time. Choose SMT3000I for most office server closets. Choose SRT3000XLI for sensitive equipment and zero-transfer-time requirements.
Does SMT3000I have SmartConnect cloud monitoring?
No. SMT3000I is the non-SmartConnect model. It does not have the IC suffix. For cloud monitoring, choose an IC model where available. For network monitoring, check SmartSlot compatibility and use an APC network management card such as AP9640 where supported.
Does Vector Dubai install SMT3000I on the same day?
For available stock in Dubai, same-day or next-day supply and installation may be arranged depending on schedule and site access. Installation includes placement, connection, load check, runtime review, and shutdown software setup where required.
Is APC SMT3000I covered under APC warranty in the UAE?
Yes, when supplied through the authorised UAE channel. Vector Dubai supplies APC/Schneider Electric UPS systems with local warranty support and helps coordinate warranty claims. Battery warranty terms are separate from UPS electronics and should be confirmed at quotation stage.
My Dubai office has voltage dips but not many blackouts. Is SMT3000I still useful?
Yes. That is one of the main reasons to choose a line interactive Smart-UPS. AVR corrects voltage dips and high voltage without switching to battery. This is useful in older buildings, mixed-use towers, warehouses, and free zone offices where short dips can restart switches, servers, or PABX equipment.
Who is the supplier of APC SMT3000I in Dubai?
Vector Dubai is an authorised APC/Schneider Electric supplier and installer in Dubai. We supply APC SMT3000I with installation, load testing, shutdown configuration, UAE warranty support, and AED quotation for procurement teams.
What is the best 3000VA UPS for a server closet in Dubai?
For a standard office server closet with servers, switches, storage, PABX, and CCTV recording, APC SMT3000I is a strong 3000VA choice when line interactive protection is enough. For zero transfer time, move to APC SRT3000XLI. The right choice depends on load, runtime requirement, heat, and whether the site needs network monitoring.
