The APC BR650MI is rated at 650VA / 390W. VA is apparent power. Watts is the real power your equipment can use. For buying and sizing, watts is the number to watch.

A 650VA UPS does not mean you can connect 650 watts of equipment. On the BR650MI, the limit is 390 watts. Go above that and the UPS can overload. Get close to that limit and your runtime becomes very short. The unit may still work, but it will not give the margin you bought a UPS for.

A POS counter with billing PC, receipt printer, barcode scanner, network switch, and router may draw 120W to 250W. Again, the BR650MI can fit, but the receipt printer must be checked. Thermal printers can have short power peaks. We do not size POS counters from guesswork when the load is unknown.

Where the BR650MI does not fit: gaming PCs, multiple desktops, laser printers, photocopiers, large PoE switches, rack servers, or a full IT cabinet. Laser printers are a common mistake. They can draw a high surge when heating, and they should not be connected to this UPS. Use the UPS for the PC, router, switch, and storage device — not the printer.

For many offices, that is the goal. Internet stays up. Calls do not drop. The CCTV recorder does not restart.

At a medium load around 100W to 150W, expect enough time to save work, close files, and shut down cleanly if the outage continues. That may be a desktop PC, monitor, router, and a small switch. This is a good working range for the BR650MI.

At 250W to 270W, runtime becomes shorter. The UPS is still inside the sensible 70% sizing rule, but it is no longer a long bridge. It is there to prevent sudden shutdown, not to keep working for an hour.

At the full 390W rating, runtime is short. Enough for emergency protection only. We do not recommend buying a BR650MI if your normal load sits close to 390W. Move to BR900MI or BR1200SI instead. You get more watt capacity, more runtime headroom, and a calmer UPS.
