"Compatible" Is Not The Same As "Will Work With Yours"

Every LiFePO4 battery listing says it's compatible. Few tell you which inverter models it works with, what communication protocol it uses, which DIP switch position to set, or which cable pinout you need.

Buy the wrong battery and you face one of three outcomes. It communicates perfectly — the best case, and more common when you match the right combination. It appears to communicate but misreads voltage data — a fault that causes chronic overcharge or failed balancing that compounds silently over months. Or it doesn't communicate at all — and you run the system on voltage-based control, which works but means the inverter cannot dynamically manage charge limits.

None of these outcomes are permanent failures. All of them are avoidable with the right information before purchase.

We stock three LiFePO4 battery brands in Dubai. Before we recommend one, we ask which inverter you have, which model series, and whether you need CAN or RS485 communication. The answer to those three questions determines which battery and which cable you need.

WhatsApp us your inverter model number. We advise on the correct battery, the correct communication protocol, and the correct DIP switch setting before you pay anything. Monday to Saturday, 8AM to 6PM.

Technical Context

CAN Bus. RS485. Pylontech Protocol.
What It Actually Means.

The specifications use technical terms that most pages don't explain. Here is what they mean in practice — and why they matter for your purchase decision.

01 — Physical Layer
CAN Bus vs RS485

CAN Bus connects the battery BMS to the inverter with a single cable and allows both devices to exchange real-time data — voltage, state of charge, temperature, charge limits — continuously and automatically. The inverter responds dynamically to what the battery tells it.

RS485 is older and simpler. The inverter polls the battery on a schedule rather than receiving data continuously. It carries the same information but less dynamically. Some Growatt SPF series models use RS485 rather than CAN.

In practice for a standard backup system: both work. The cable and the connector pinout are what matter most — a CAN cable wired incorrectly at the RJ45 will not communicate even when both devices support the protocol.

02 — Data Layer
What "Pylontech Protocol" Actually Means

Pylontech published their CAN message format around 2015. It was never a formal standard. Other manufacturers reverse-engineered it and copied it. Inverters added "Pylontech compatible" modes because enough batteries used it.

The protocol works through three core messages. The first tells the inverter charge and discharge voltage and current limits. The second reports state of charge and state of health. The third reports real-time voltage, current and temperature.

When a battery claims "Pylontech compatible" it means it sends data in approximately this format. The word "approximately" is the problem. Some send wrong byte order — a voltage of 56.0V gets interpreted as 1,229V. Others send messages at irregular intervals — the inverter times out. Pylontech and Dyness implement this correctly. Many generic brands do not.

03 — Configuration
The DIP Switch — The Part Nobody Explains

The Dyness battery uses a physical DIP switch on the master unit to select which inverter communication profile to use. Wrong position means no communication — even though both devices fully support the protocol.

DIP 3 ON: Deye, Victron, Solis, Goodwe, Sofar, SMA, Must and most hybrid inverters.

DIP 2 ON: Growatt SPH/SPA via CAN.

DIP 2 and 3 ON: Growatt SPF series via RS485.

The Growatt inverter menu must also be set to the correct lithium protocol number. We specify both settings when you order a Dyness battery from us.

UAE Installation Guide

Where You Install the Battery Matters More Than Most Suppliers Admit

LiFePO4 batteries perform best between 20°C and 45°C. For every 10°C above 25°C, cycle life can reduce by up to 50%. In a Dubai summer, an outdoor utility cabinet in direct sun can reach 60°C or higher. The battery you install is only as good as the environment you install it in.

Rule 1
Outdoor Installation

Shade and airflow are non-negotiable. An IP65-rated cabinet on a shaded north-facing wall with 10cm clearance on all sides and louvred vents at top and bottom maintains acceptable temperatures. Direct sun exposure on any enclosure is not acceptable regardless of the battery's temperature rating.

Rule 2
Indoor Installation

Always better than outdoor. A ventilated utility room, server room or comms cabinet at ambient building temperature is the correct environment. The battery does not need air conditioning — it needs the room not to exceed 40°C. Most indoor spaces in UAE buildings meet this naturally.

Rule 3
The 40°C Effect

At 40°C, LiFePO4 temporarily delivers slightly more than rated capacity because lower internal resistance allows more current flow. The battery appears to perform well initially. This is the early stage of accelerated degradation — the short-term gain is real, the long-term cost compounds. It is not a sign that heat is acceptable.

Tell us where the battery will be installed when you WhatsApp. We advise on enclosure type, ventilation and mounting for your specific location before anything ships.

The Financial Case

You Have Replaced Your Lead Acid Batteries Before.
Here Is Why You Won't Need To Again.

Lead acid batteries degrade for two compounding reasons in Gulf conditions. First, heat — sustained temperatures above 35°C accelerate the internal chemical reactions that permanently reduce capacity. A lead acid battery rated for 500 cycles at 25°C delivers closer to 200–300 cycles in UAE conditions. Second, depth of discharge — lead acid begins degrading faster when discharged below 50% of capacity. Most UPS systems in a real outage discharge well below 50%, which compounds the heat damage.

The result: most Dubai businesses replace their lead acid UPS battery bank every 2 to 3 years. At AED 800 to 1,500 per battery, a 4-battery bank costs AED 3,200 to 6,000 every 3 years — AED 10,000 to 20,000 over a decade, plus labour.

One specific fact for UAE buyers rarely mentioned: LiFePO4 chemistry uses a phosphate-based cathode that is inherently more thermally stable than the oxide-based chemistries in NMC and NCA lithium batteries. This is why LiFePO4 — not generic "lithium" — is the correct choice for Gulf climate energy storage.

You already have an inverter. The question is whether the battery will actually communicate with it — not just claim to. Pylontech's CAN protocol is what Growatt, Deye, Solis, Victron and most other hybrid inverters were designed to support natively. It is not compatible in the approximate sense — it is the original protocol that all others have tried to replicate. When you choose Pylontech you are choosing the source, not the copy.

This battery is not for a solar system. It is for the buyer fitting a battery into a server room UPS — and who has realised that most UPS batteries were designed for lead acid and the lithium option was added as an afterthought. AgileLi was designed from the start for UPS application. The charge cycle profile, the rack form factor, the BMS communication — all built around how a UPS actually operates, not adapted from a solar storage architecture.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pylontech US5000 is confirmed compatible with Growatt SPF 5000 ES and SPF 6000 ES PLUS via CAN communication — confirmed in Pylontech's official compatibility list updated January 2025. The Growatt inverter must be set to Lithium battery type and Pylontech protocol in the inverter menu. A CAN cable connects the battery master unit to the Growatt BMS port. The Growatt DoD should be set to 80% or lower in the inverter settings to prevent system shutdown.
The DIP switch is a small physical switch on the master battery unit that tells the battery which communication profile to use with the connected inverter. On Dyness batteries, the correct DIP position changes depending on your inverter brand. Deye, Victron, Solis and most hybrid inverters use position 3 ON. Growatt SPH/SPA CAN communication uses position 2 ON. Growatt SPF RS485 uses positions 2 and 3 ON. The wrong DIP position means no communication — the battery and inverter will not talk to each other even though both support the protocol. We specify the correct setting when you order a Dyness battery.
WhatsApp us your inverter brand and model number. We cross-reference against official manufacturer compatibility lists and inverter firmware documentation and advise which battery and protocol applies. If your inverter model requires a specific firmware version on the battery side, we confirm that is met before shipping.
Yes. If communication cannot be established, the inverter operates on voltage-based control — it charges and discharges based on programmed voltage thresholds rather than real-time BMS data. The battery's own internal BMS handles cell protection independently. The system works reliably this way. The limitation is that the inverter displays approximate state of charge rather than the accurate percentage from the BMS. For most office and home backup applications this is acceptable.
It depends on the inverter and battery brand. Pylontech US5000 stacks to 15 units per string — approximately 72kWh. Dyness A48100 stacks to 8 units — approximately 38.4kWh. ATTOM AgileLi supports parallel expansion — we confirm the maximum configuration for your specific inverter before you order.
LiFePO4 operates correctly up to 45°C. For every 10°C above 25°C, cycle life can reduce by up to 50%. Installation environment matters significantly in the UAE. A battery in an air-conditioned server room or ventilated indoor utility space at 20 to 30°C delivers its rated 10+ year service life. A battery in an outdoor enclosure in direct summer sun may deliver significantly fewer cycles. We advise on installation location for every order.
LiFePO4 uses a phosphate-based cathode chemistry that is more thermally stable than the oxide-based chemistries used in NMC and NCA lithium batteries. This thermal stability means LiFePO4 is safer, longer-lasting and more appropriate for warm climates. It is the chemistry used in almost all solar energy storage systems and UPS applications. When a supplier says "lithium battery" they may mean LiFePO4 or a different chemistry — the distinction matters for cycle life expectations and Gulf climate suitability.
Calculate your critical load — the devices you need running during an outage — and multiply by the hours of backup you need. A 5-computer office with router, CCTV and LED lighting draws approximately 800W. A 5kWh battery (4kWh usable) runs that load for around 5 hours. WhatsApp us your device list and required runtime — we return the correct capacity and AED pricing the same day.
