Multi-Gigabit Ports Across the Entire Range
The TZ280 — the entry-level model — ships with 8×1GbE and 2×1G SFP. The TZ380 and above have 2×5G SFP+ ports standard. The TZ680 has 2×10G SFP+. A business running a 1 Gbps Etisalat circuit today will have a 2.5G or 5G circuit within two to three years. The Gen 8 hardware will still be relevant. The Gen 7 will be the bottleneck.

ZTNA and SD-WAN Built In — No Extra Licence
On Gen 7, Zero Trust Network Access required a separate Cloud Secure Edge subscription. On Gen 8, the ZTNA connector is integrated into APSS and MPSS. SD-WAN multipath routing is native in SonicOS 8. For a business with multiple UAE offices or remote staff, these features are available the moment the firewall is activated.

Gen 7 ran SonicOS 7. Gen 8 runs SonicOS 8 — an entirely rebuilt interface with cloud-native management, the SAMI AI assistant embedded in the console, and a modern UX built for multi-site visibility. A Gen 7 unit cannot be updated to SonicOS 8. The software required new hardware to run.

The column most Gen 7 owners fixate on is throughput — Gen 8 is 2x to 3x faster on threat prevention across equivalent models. But the throughput gap is not what makes the upgrade significant for most UAE businesses. What makes it significant is ZTNA included, SD-WAN included, and the $200,000 warranty on MPSS. Cellular Failover — For Single-Circuit Offices on Etisalat or du
Every Gen 8 TZ model supports USB cellular dongles — USB Type-A and Type-C on the TZ units. The UAE ISP reality: most SMB offices run a single Etisalat or du fibre circuit. When that circuit goes down, the office loses internet. Phones stop. Cloud applications disconnect. A 4G or 5G cellular dongle connected to the TZ firewall becomes an automatic failover circuit. Dual PSU — For Offices Where Downtime Is Not an Option
The TZ380 and all models above it support a secondary power supply unit — sold separately, installed alongside the primary. If the primary PSU fails, the secondary takes over without the firewall restarting. This matters in specific scenarios: DIFC and ADGM offices where compliance requires continuous logging. Data centres and server rooms where a firewall restart causes a network interruption measured in minutes. 24-hour operations — logistics, hospitality, emergency services — where the network cannot go down for a hardware fault. For most SMB offices, a single PSU is sufficient. SAMI — SonicWall AI for Monitoring and Insight — is an AI assistant embedded in the SonicWall Unified Management platform. It is available on all Gen 8 deployments managed through the unified platform. You ask SAMI questions in plain language: list all firewalls where the subscription expires within 30 days, show me which sites blocked the most threats this week, which devices are running outdated firmware. SAMI queries your deployment and returns the answer. For a single-site office it is a management convenience. For a business managing firewalls across multiple UAE offices, it replaces manual checking of each device individually.
Can I migrate my SonicWall Gen 7 configuration to Gen 8?
Yes. Gen 8 supports in-product migration from Gen 6.5 and Gen 7 firewalls. Your existing network zones, VPN tunnels, security policies, address objects, and content filtering rules can be imported into the Gen 8 device before it goes live. VLANs and tunnel interfaces must be removed from the import before running the migration — VDS handles this as part of the pre-installation configuration.
