SIM Cards in the Phone System — How, Exactly? And Is It Allowed?
Every GSM gateway conversation begins with the same two questions, and both deserve straight answers before a single dirham is discussed. The how: the gateway holds your own business SIM cards and presents them to your phone system as a trunk — a set of lines — so the system can place and receive calls over the mobile network by rules you set. The allowed: the equipment is standard, openly sold telecom hardware, and its use is governed by TDRA regulation and your mobile operator's business terms — which is precisely the frame we configure inside, and the frame this whole page is written in.
What follows is the honest map: what the box does, the three jobs it lawfully exists for, which models carry 4G, what everything costs in AED, and the configuration discipline that keeps your system on the right side of your own paperwork.
What the Box Actually Does — One SIM, One Channel, One Call
Open the gateway and the mechanism is almost domestic: SIM slots, like a row of phones without screens. Your Etisalat or du business SIM goes into a channel. The gateway connects to your PBX over the network and registers as a mobile trunk, sitting alongside your fixed trunks like one more set of lines. Routing rules — written with you, documented at handover — decide which calls may travel over the mobile channels and which must not. When a call routes out, it behaves exactly as a call from that SIM would; when someone dials the SIM's number, it rings into your system like any other line. And the arithmetic is refreshingly honest: one SIM channel carries one call at a time. A TG800 with eight SIMs is eight simultaneous calls. You size the box by peak simultaneous calls — never by headcount.

The Calling Path That Does Not Depend on Your Street
Everything fixed in your building tends to share a fate: the same cable route, the same cabinet, the same exchange. The mobile network shares none of it — engineered, powered and towered independently. A GSM trunk on your system is therefore a genuinely separate calling path: when fixed services are unavailable, routing rules move outbound calls to the mobile channels and your essential calling continues. The system's own controls keep the design inside the paperwork — per-channel routing restrictions and call-duration limits are configured, not hoped for. The TG series sends and receives SMS through its management interface and offers an API for connecting a messaging application. Used well, this is quietly valuable operations plumbing: appointment reminders, delivery notifications, service alerts — your system messaging your own customers about their own business, under your operator's messaging terms. And the honest boundary, stated here rather than discovered later: bulk and marketing SMS is a regulated activity in the UAE with its own registration requirements. The Tiny Office That Runs Without a PBX
Buried deep in the TG datasheet is a feature worth reading twice: the gateway includes a built-in SIP server for IP phones. Read that again slowly — it means a very small office can register a handful of IP phones directly to the gateway and run entirely on mobile channels, with no separate PBX purchased at all. Site offices, two-person startups, a trading desk waiting on fit-out: phones on desks, calls in and out, one small box. We will also give you the honest ceiling in the same breath — when the team grows or features start to matter, a proper system takes over and the gateway keeps its trunk job. The tiny-office pattern is a starting point that wastes nothing, which is exactly what a starting point should be.
One to Sixteen Channels — and Which Models Carry 4G
The TG ladder runs 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 SIM channels — TG100, TG200, TG400, TG800, TG1600 — so the box follows your simultaneous-call count. Now the fact that decides most 2026 purchases, printed with the precision it deserves: on current-generation hardware, 4G LTE with VoLTE is supported across the TG200, TG400, TG800 and TG1600 — only the single-channel TG100 remains 2G/3G. The buying caution that comes with it, born of real stock in the market: earlier-generation TG hardware may carry GSM/3G modules only, and 4G on any chassis depends on the hardware generation and the cellular modules actually fitted. So we verify three things before you commit — hardware revision, fitted modules, and frequency bands against your operators — a thirty-second check that decides the gateway's working life. The distribution channel labels 4G builds with an L suffix (TG200L, TG400L, TG800L): the same chassis fitted with an LTE cellular module — a full SKU such as TG800L-EC21-EUX simply names the exact LTE module fitted, and the module version is what sets the LTE bands. W and G suffixes mark 3G and 2G builds, quoted on request. Earlier-generation TG hardware may carry GSM/3G modules only, so we verify hardware generation, fitted modules and frequency bands against your operators before dispatch — and we will usually steer you toward the 4G builds, because a gateway should outlive the network generation it was born on. Antennas, Placement and the Survey That Prevents the Ticket
A GSM gateway is a radio, and radios reward respect. The units use external antennas, and the larger models — TG400, TG800, TG1600 — support a 4-in-1 antenna splitter, so the gateway can live in the server room while its antennas live where the signal actually is: the window line, the riser, the roof penetration that already exists. Our installation starts with a signal survey at the intended antenna position, per operator, before anything is mounted; every channel is test-called before handover. Carrier-Grade Where It Counts
The datasheet lines that decide day-two happiness: ITU-T G.168 echo cancellation on every channel; TLS and SRTP transport for encrypted signalling and media; G.722 wideband among the codecs; OpenVPN, firewall, VLAN and QoS built into the unit; dual Ethernet on the TG800 and TG1600; mobile port groups so channels are pooled and managed as sets; USSD support for the practical realities of SIM management, such as balance checks on prepaid plans; and web-based management that a competent administrator reads at first sight. One boundary stated so nobody misbuys: the TG series is a cellular voice and SMS trunk gateway — it does not provide 4G internet data service to your network. Boring engineering, deliberately listed — because boring engineering is what a trunk that simply works every day is made of.
How We Install — Survey, Configure, Prove
First the survey: intended use named, plans matched to it, signal measured at the antenna position. Then the bench: channels configured, routing rules written, duration limits and restrictions set to your operator terms. Installation places the box where it belongs and the antennas where the signal is; every channel takes a test call; the continuity design is proven by disabling the fixed trunks on purpose and watching the calls flow anyway. Handover includes the routing document and the compliance notes — so the system's behaviour and its paperwork agree on day one and stay agreeing.
