Description
APC Smart UPS SRTG20KXLI Dubai 20kVA 20kW Online UPS
The server room is still powered. The lights are on. The cooling is running. But the core switch has rebooted twice since midnight, the storage array has logged input power faults, and the access control server is showing disk errors.
That is how many 20kVA UPS projects start in Dubai. Not with a neat procurement plan. With a site that has grown from one rack to three racks, from one server to a full stack, from a basic network room to the point where a voltage event can stop billing, CCTV, PABX, Wi-Fi, ERP, and door access at the same time.
The APC SRTG20KXLI is built for that point. Not a desktop UPS. Not a small office unit. A 20,000VA / 20,000W online double conversion UPS for high-load IT and facility infrastructure that needs clean power, zero transfer time, and proper installation by people who understand 3-phase power in UAE buildings.
What the APC SRTG20KXLI is
The SRTG20KXLI is a 20kVA / 20kW APC Smart-UPS from the new-generation SRTG range. It is designed for rack-based, high-capacity installations where small UPS systems are no longer enough and a 3-phase power design is required.
This model sits above the SRTG5KXLI, SRTG6KXLI, SRTG8KXLI, and SRTG10KXLI in the SRTG range. The difference is not just size. At 20kVA, the UPS normally becomes part of the electrical and IT room design. Input cabling, output distribution, bypass planning, rack position, cooling, battery access, and shutdown logic all need to be checked before installation.
The SRTG20KXLI is for server rooms, data cabinets with multiple racks, enterprise network cores, telecom rooms, access control and CCTV head-end rooms, storage systems, medical support equipment, finance offices, and free zone facilities where downtime has a direct cost.
Vector Dubai supplies and installs APC Smart-UPS systems across Dubai and the UAE. For this size of UPS, installation is not box delivery. The unit is positioned, connected, checked against site power, tested under load, and handed over with the shutdown and monitoring plan agreed.
Online double conversion — why it matters at 20kVA
Online double conversion continuously converts incoming AC power to DC and then back to clean AC output through the inverter. The connected load is isolated from most input power problems. Transfer time is zero because the inverter is already feeding the load. This is the right topology for server rooms, storage, network cores, medical systems, trading floors, and high-value IT equipment in Dubai.
20kVA means 20kW. That is the big SRTG advantage.
Every UPS has two power numbers: VA and watts. At small UPS sizes, the gap between those two numbers often confuses buyers. A 3000VA UPS may only support 2700W. A 1500VA unit may support 900W or 1000W depending on the model. The VA number looks large, but the real load is the watt rating.
The APC SRTG20KXLI is different because it is rated at 20,000VA and 20,000W. That is unity power factor. In plain language: the full 20kVA nameplate can be used as 20kW real power, subject to site design and load type.
That matters in modern IT rooms. Server power supplies are more efficient than they used to be. Storage arrays, switches, firewalls, routers, CCTV servers, and virtualisation hosts often run at high power factor. A unity power factor UPS avoids the old problem where a “20kVA” UPS could not actually deliver 20kW to real equipment.
Still, we do not recommend loading any UPS to 100% during design. Use the 70% rule. For the SRTG20KXLI, that means planning the normal connected load around 14,000W, with room for startup variation, future rack growth, battery ageing, and Dubai temperature conditions.
The 70% rule for a 20kVA UPS
The SRTG20KXLI is rated at 20,000W. For a healthy design, keep the normal connected load near 14,000W. This gives headroom for future racks, battery ageing, inverter efficiency, and load changes. If your measured load is already above 16,000W, send us the rack list before ordering. The design may need a larger UPS or split load design.
Where SRTG20KXLI fits in Dubai projects
A 20kVA UPS is usually bought for one of three reasons.
First: the existing UPS is overloaded. This is common in Dubai offices where the IT room started with one rack and then picked up storage, extra switches, CCTV recording, access control, Wi-Fi controllers, and PABX equipment over several years. The old 6kVA or 10kVA UPS still switches on, but the load percentage is too high and runtime is too low.
Second: the site has moved to 3-phase power planning. At 20kVA, single-phase design is often not the cleanest way to protect the load. A 3-phase input UPS helps balance the electrical design and reduces stress on one phase.
Third: the load is too important for line interactive protection. Dubai’s grid is stable, but older commercial buildings, high-density towers, industrial areas, and some free zone sites still see voltage dips, short interruptions, and electrical noise from nearby lifts, chillers, construction work, or large machinery. Online double conversion keeps the output clean even when input quality is not perfect.
This is why the SRTG20KXLI makes sense for DIFC offices running trading and finance systems, DMCC companies with mixed IT and CCTV loads, Jebel Ali Free Zone warehouses with network and security rooms, clinics with sensitive back-office equipment, and multi-branch businesses that need the same UPS standard across different UAE sites.
SRTG new-generation positioning
The SRTG range is APC’s new-generation Smart-UPS RT platform. For UAE buyers, the main point is simple: higher usable watt capacity, better fit for modern IT loads, and a cleaner upgrade path from older RT installations.
Older UPS projects often had a mismatch between kVA and kW. The consultant specified 20kVA, the buyer assumed 20kW, and the actual usable watt rating was lower. That mistake becomes expensive when racks are added later. The SRTG20KXLI removes that confusion with 20kVA / 20kW output.
The SRTG range also makes sense for replacement projects where older APC RT or SURT units are reaching end of life. If you have an existing 15kVA or 20kVA APC installation, Vector Dubai can inspect the current load, battery condition, bypass arrangement, and rack space before recommending a like-for-like replacement or an SRTG upgrade.
For procurement teams, the question is not only “what is the price?” It is “will this UPS fit the room, the load, the power feed, the rack, the cooling, and the maintenance plan?” That is where a site survey matters.
Management, monitoring, and shutdown
The SRTG20KXLI should be treated as a managed UPS, not a silent black box in the rack. For a 20kVA installation, monitoring is part of the job.
At this level, buyers normally need network-based UPS status, battery alerts, event logs, load percentage, runtime estimates, input voltage information, and clean shutdown rules for servers. That may be handled through APC network management hardware, SNMP, PowerChute, or the site’s monitoring platform. The final setup depends on the IT team’s standard.
SmartConnect note for SRTG20KXLI
Do not treat the SRTG20KXLI like a small IC-suffix SmartConnect UPS. For a 20kVA SRTG project, monitoring should be confirmed during quotation and matched to the site requirement: SNMP, network management card, PowerChute shutdown, or building monitoring integration.
A proper shutdown plan matters. If the power fails at 2AM, the UPS should not simply beep until the battery is empty. The monitoring system should alert the right person. Servers should shut down in the right order. Storage should close cleanly. Virtual machines should not crash. Network equipment should stay up long enough for the shutdown process to finish.
That is the difference between buying a UPS and installing a power protection system.
Runtime in Dubai. Be careful with brochure numbers.
Runtime is where large UPS projects go wrong. A 20kVA UPS does not automatically mean long backup time. It means the UPS can support a large load. Runtime depends on the actual watt load, the installed battery system, battery age, room temperature, and whether external battery cabinets or modules are included in the design.
For the SRTG20KXLI, runtime must be calculated against your measured load. A 6,000W load, a 10,000W load, and a 16,000W load will produce very different runtime numbers on the same UPS. That is why Vector Dubai asks for rack equipment lists, power supply ratings, or live load readings before quoting a final runtime commitment.
In Dubai, temperature matters. Battery performance drops when the UPS room is hot. Server rooms that sit above 30°C will see shorter runtime and shorter battery life than air-conditioned rooms. Non-cooled electrical rooms can reach much higher temperatures during summer, especially in warehouses and older commercial buildings.
Expected battery life in Dubai is usually 2 to 3 years. In a well-cooled room, batteries last longer. In a warm room with poor ventilation, they fail earlier. That is not a brand issue. It is chemistry. Heat damages VRLA batteries faster than most buyers expect.
Battery and runtime note
The SRTG20KXLI battery configuration and any external battery requirement should be confirmed against the final APC datasheet and your actual site load. For 20kVA projects, Vector Dubai calculates runtime before supply and installation, not after delivery.
SRTG10KXLI vs SRTG20KXLI — when to step up
The SRTG10KXLI is 10,000VA / 10,000W. The SRTG20KXLI is 20,000VA / 20,000W. Both are new-generation APC SRTG online UPS systems, but they serve different project sizes.
Choose the SRTG10KXLI if your real connected load is under 7,000W and the rack growth is limited. That fits many single-rack IT rooms, network cores, and medium server rooms.
Choose the SRTG20KXLI if the measured load is above 7,000W, if you expect more racks, or if the site needs a 3-phase input UPS design. The 20kVA model gives more room for growth and makes more sense where one UPS is feeding a larger distribution path.
If the load is already close to 14,000W, do not guess. Send the equipment list. We may recommend the SRTG20KXLI with careful load planning, or a larger 3-phase UPS design if the site is still growing.
Decision guide
Step down to SRTG10KXLI for loads under 7,000W with limited expansion. Choose SRTG20KXLI for higher rack density, 3-phase input projects, and rooms where future growth is expected. For loads above 16,000W, ask for a site survey before ordering.
Outlets, cabling, and rack planning
This is not a C13 desktop UPS. A 20kVA rack UPS normally feeds power distribution through planned electrical output, not a row of small IEC outlets. The final output arrangement depends on site design, downstream distribution, rack PDU design, bypass requirement, and electrical approval.
Before supply, Vector Dubai checks where the UPS will sit, how it will be fed, what it will feed, and how maintenance bypass will be handled. For some projects, the UPS is installed near the server racks. For others, it sits in the electrical or IT room and feeds a protected distribution board.
Rack planning also matters. Weight, depth, service clearance, cable entry, battery access, and cooling air path all need to be checked. A 20kVA UPS should not be forced into a rack position just because there is space. There needs to be service access after installation.
We also check the room cooling. A UPS at this size adds heat. If the server room AC is already struggling, adding a 20kVA UPS without checking thermal load is a mistake.

Frequently asked questions
My equipment load is 12,000W. Do I need the SRTG20KXLI or SRTG10KXLI?
You need the SRTG20KXLI. A 12,000W load is above the safe design range for a 10,000W UPS. On the SRTG20KXLI, 12,000W is 60% load, which leaves healthy headroom for startup variation, future rack growth, and battery ageing.
Can the SRTG20KXLI run a server room through a full power outage?
It depends on load and battery configuration. A 20kVA UPS supports a large load, but runtime is not fixed. If you need 15, 30, or 60 minutes, we calculate the required battery setup against your actual watt load before quoting.
What is the replacement battery for the SRTG20KXLI?
The battery module must be confirmed from the APC SRTG20KXLI datasheet and the installed battery configuration. For large SRTG systems, Vector Dubai checks the installed battery set before quoting replacement. In Dubai conditions, plan for battery replacement every 2 to 3 years depending on room temperature.
SRTG10KXLI vs SRTG20KXLI — what is the difference?
SRTG10KXLI is 10,000VA / 10,000W. SRTG20KXLI is 20,000VA / 20,000W and is suited to larger rack loads and 3-phase input projects. Choose based on measured watt load, not only kVA.
Does Vector Dubai install the SRTG20KXLI on the same day?
For 20kVA UPS projects, same-day box delivery may be possible, but installation depends on site readiness. We need to check power feed, cable path, rack or floor position, bypass plan, load, and access approval before commissioning.
